5 Questions That Need To Be Answered in 2014

2013 was a great year for all that is nerdy and geeky but that year is behind us and it’s time to look ahead at the things we’re dying to know about the future of our favorite characters and franchises. There’s plenty to come in 2014 and these are just a few of the burning questions we all need answered.

5. What Will Peter Capaldi’s Doctor Be Like?

Christmas Day marked the end of an era as Matt Smith tore off his bowtie and regenerated into the 12th Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi. While Smith will certainly be missed the big question now is what exactly will Capaldi’s Doctor be like in the coming season? Capaldi’s age would indicate the time of flirting with Clara is likely over, and a lot of people are hoping for a crankier Doctor, maybe one who’s a little darker and swears up a storm, which is supported by Steven Moffat describing Capaldi’s Doctor as an “old beast to snarl at you for a bit.”

[“Where the &#%! did I leave Gallifrey?”]

More than his personality though, people are dying to know what the 12th Doctor will be wearing, as the outfit is generally the most iconic aspect of any Doctor’s era. We won’t find out officially until Autumn 2014 but that hasn’t stopped fans from coming up with some great ideas of what Capaldi could look like in the new role.

4. What Exactly is Man of Steel 2?

Despite being generally underwhelming, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel movie made a lot of money this past summer prompting Warner Bros. to immediately greenlight a sequel, the details of which have most of us nerds scratching our heads and praying for the best. The film has no official title yet but we know Henry Cavill is back as Superman, with Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. So is this actually Superman 2, or is it Batman vs. Superman, or is this a full-on Justice League movie?

[More importantly, is there any chance it won’t be terrible?]

Snyder announced the film at Comic-Con with a passage from The Dark Knight Returns that implied the main focus would be Batman vs. Superman. If that’s the case how does Wonder Woman fit into any of this? And who will be our villains, if any? And seriously, Affleck as Batman? Other than the casting confirmations we’ve got no other information to work with, making the film’s development one of the thing’s we’ll all be talking about in the coming year.

3. Will Nightwing Die in 2014?

nightwing dead

So far in the DC Comics event, Forever Evil, we’ve seen Nightwing captured and have his true identity exposed to the whole world, a pretty big deal in itself but there’s also serious speculation that DC might be killing Dick Grayson off completely in the new year. Forever Evil #6, due out in February, is being promoted with the ominous tag line “The final fate of Nightwing!” due to be released at the same time Nightwing’s solo title is wrapping up its own current storyline. Additionally, DC also recently released a teaser image for new weekly series, Batman: Eternal that shows all the Bat-family gathered with no sign of Dick Grayson as we know him.

Oh sure, there’s a guy partially hidden wearing what looks like a Nightwing mask, but that character is clearly and purposefully blond. Some speculate that Dick will be just fine and dyed his hair after the revealing of his identity. Others say that the Nightwing in the image is Calvin Rose, lead character of the series Talon which is conveniently ending in March. So the question remains, is that Dick Grayson or someone in his costume? Dan Didio, the Co-Publisher at DC, admitted that he tried to have Nightwing killed off in 2005 during the Infinite Crisis storyline. Who’s to say his diabolical scheme hasn’t finally succeeded?

2. Who will be showrunning Iron Fist and Luke Cage on Netflix?

heroes for hire

A shout of excitement was heard around the world when Marvel announced they would be developing four brand new shows with Netflix starring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, with the immediate questions being who will star and who will run things. We already know that Daredevil is in the safe hands of Drew Goddard and Jessica Jones will have Twilight-movie scribe Melissa Rosenberg at its head, but there’s still no word on who the showrunners for Iron Fist and Luke Cage will be. The founding members of Heroes for Hire have been making an impression in the animated world of late, appearing in Avengers: EMH and Spider-man Unlimited, but it seems Marvel is taking its time finding the right people to run their solo shows. We can also look forward to exciting casting news for all four shows in 2014, but it may take awhile until there’s anything solid, so far there aren’t even any rumors to report.

1. What’s so magical about Tahiti?

Whether you like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or not, there’s a good chance you’ve been following along with the show in hopes of finally finding out exactly how #CoulsonLives. After being stabbed through the heart by Loki in the Avengers we all thought Agent Coulson was dead and gone until it was announced that Clark Gregg was so likeable that they brought him back to life to headline Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but the means of his resurrection is still a mystery.

[But how???]

Within the show Coulson thinks he just died for a few moments, was revived and then sent Tahiti (“It’s a magical place”) to recuperate but clues throughout the season prove there’s a lot more going on. First of all Coulson admits he feels different, has no muscle memory and was recently kidnapped by bad guys just to learn more about his trip to “Tahiti”. Theories of his resurrection range from Life Model Decoy, to magical resurrection in Valhalla since he technically died in battle against an Asgardian. No need to theorize long though as this mystery may be the first one we get solved in 2014. The January 7th episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is titled “A Magical Place” and is likely to finally address the details of Coulson’s resurrection.

  1. Jami

Who says the flirting has to end? I’ve always been attracted to older men myself. There’s nothing wrong with a May/December romance no matter what people think. (Besides, even if his new body was that of a 12 year old the Doctor would STILL be way older than Clara!)

Though I admit I’d love to see Clara gone. I want either Donna Noble to return or see Osgood become a companion instead. Clara annoys me. She’s too much Rose Tyler.
