Amazon to acquire ComiXology

Big news comic book fans, Amazon has just announced its plans to acquire ComiXology. While this means wider distribution and wider availability of your favourite titles, it also puts the brick and mortar comic book shops we love in danger. Amazon already sells a full catalogue of comics through its online store, and also distributes through Kindle; with ComiXology under its control it will also have reign over digital distribution.

ComiXology made a name for itself by becoming the top grossing non-game app it offers users a selection of single issues and collected volumes with “guided view” technology that flows seamlessly from panel to panel. They have made comics easily accessible, convenient to read, and have even made it possible for creators to publish and release their material right to the app. In a press release that graced ComiXology’s home page, CEO David Steinberger assured readers that they are nowhere near finished pushing the boundaries of how we read comics and he feels that with Amazon running the show “[they’ve] only just begun.” But Amazon’s ever growing control over comic distribution, means brick and mortar stores might soon fade out of existence. I don’t know about you guys, but I look forward to every Wednesday when I can hang out and chat about the new titles coming out, getting recommendations and attending events at my local comic shop are all part of the experience.

What do you guys think? Are you thrilled about Amazon getting more comics out there? Or are you worried about what their distribution might mean?
