Calm Down – They aren’t making a Labyrinth Sequel…I think.

My Facebook timeline was freaking out on Friday, for obvious reasons. A few words in a closing paragraph in article by Variety sent news sources across the internet into DEFCON 5. The culprit?

It’s also working on a quartet of legacy titles in the Henson library — a “Fraggle Rock” movie that’s been in development at New Regency; a sequel to 1982’s “The Dark Crystal”; a sequel to 1986’s “Labyrinth”; and a movie based on the Emmet Otter character.

Wait…what did I just read?

a sequel to 1986’s “Labyrinth”

GREAT BOWIE’S BULGE, CAN IT BE TRUE!?

Baby Toby’s all grown up and making awesome puppet movies. Sarah is way past 14 now. Most importantly, Jareth is presumably still in Owl Druid form because HE HAS NO POWER OVER HER. So…how could they possibly make a continuation of such an iconic classic a thing?

Well, here’s the kicker – they “aren’t”.

This weekend, an unknown source spoke to Entertainment Weekly, and had this to say about the rumours:

While they are working on a Fraggle Rock movie and a Dark Crystal sequel, as the Variety article stated, there are currently no plans to reboot, revive, or make a sequel to Labyrinth. It’s one of those legacy titles that is floated at most meetings, but, sadly, nothing is actually in development at the moment.

ugh

MAKE UP YOUR MINDS.

Now, while this may technically tide people over for now…who is the unknown source? Why did Variety publish that snippet in the first place? Are we being toyed with? As if our excitement and eventual disappointment (depending on wether you found the news good or bad) mean nothing?

NOTHING, TRA LA LA?

For the time being, we’ll have to focus on the Fraggle Rock and Dark Crystal projects…both of which were absolute favourites of mine, and still are. But until an additional source comes forward to officially squash the hype…I’m not sure I’m convinced.

Also to note, this isn’t the first time Labyrinth sequel/reboot rumours have been floating around..

What do you think? Was the “unknown source” telling the truth, or are they just throwing the masses off until a more solid plan for the film is in motion?
