Canadian Horror showcased at Blood in the Snow

Want to hide from the holiday muzak and protect yourself from the shopping hordes this weekend? I’ve got your solution, especially if you’re a fan of horror!

This weekend is the third year of Blood in the Snow  Canadian Film Festival.  Their focus is on giving Canadian horror creators a venue, and letting horror fans bask in our home grown creative projects.  This year they are back at the Carleton Cinemas, just steps away from Yonge and College. Beyond the films, they have a Vendor Village running Friday evening and Saturday and Sunday afternoons, with vendors like Fangoria Magazine, Suspect Video, Roadkill Jill Creations with handmade creepery, and Zombie Jesus hawking his comics, graphic novels, and t-shirts.

There’s also an opening and closing night party along with festival awards, but mainly it’s about the movies!

This year’s line up of eight features (some so popular that there are two screenings) and a showcase of short films (also screening twice- Friday at 9:30 and Saturday at 7:15). All the features are paired with a short as well.

And what are Canadian Horror creators creating? Here’s a selection but check out their website for more information. We’ll also have a few reviews before the festival, and more afterwards so you can see what you missed.

There’s a wide selection of horror styles, from the lean science fiction Ejecta (review here)about a sunstorm and alien interaction, to the clearly made from love, not money Teddy Bomb (review) with Hong Kong style action and a sentient teddybear bomb. Of course there’s a vampire film Queen of Blood, a house in the middle of nowhere film, Berkshire County, and a ‘wake up in an abandoned  hospital with strangers’ film – Kingdom Come. And then there are items which defy being pigeon holed: in a study of gratuitous comedic obscenity, Bloody Knuckles examines how an extra hand might not be helpful.

There’s also a change to meet many of the filmmakers at the two parties, and hopefully some of the screenings will have Q&As.

Me?  I’ve got my popcorn ready! This weekend will be a horror.
