E3’s Halo 5 Guardians Trailer Breakdown

The Halo 5 Guardians trailer and panel at E3 2014 was intense, emotional, exciting,  and spawned a flurry of speculation and theory from Halo enthusiasts. There was a lot to take in, so let’s break it down.

Master Chief is disillusioned at this point; after the loss of Cortana he intends on treading his own path of self discovery. The Arbiter is preparing Agent Locke for his impending hunt for a rogue Master Chief, and it is shown that they are on the Elite home planet of Sanghelios.

It is clear that Master Chief is needed to save humanity from a threat, but not much more than this is made apparent. We can infer that the threat is massive, giving the Arbiter’s desire to work with Master Chief some justification.

The inclusion of Agent Locke opens up an opportunity for a perspective shift between Locke and Chief during campaign gameplay. Master Chief’s desire to find himself also opens up an opportunity to see more of Dr. Catherine Halsey – which would be amazing.

One thing that I am personally torn about is the Halo Master Chief Collection; the inclusion of Halo 1 through 4, and the addition of a digitally remastered Halo 2 to mark the 10 year anniversary of Halo. This is incredibly exciting. One of the major drawbacks to the new consoles was the lack of backwards compatibility. Having all 4 games available on one disk through one interface is fantastic, and helps to phase out the necessity for having both a 360 and an XBOX One [note the term ‘necessity’, most people will still keep the console for nostalgic reasons, even if it is just to remember that old familiar frustration of red rings and circle scratches].

What do you think about having all 4 games on one disk? Do you like/dislike that the entire Halo saga is becoming so readily accessible? Should the older Halo games be kept as remakes, keeping that distinction between the devout fans/diligent collectors and the general human populous intact? If so, would that make us hipsters, or gamer grumps?
