Green Light for “Walking Dead” Companion Pilot

This week it was announced by AMC that filming for a “Walking Dead” companion series pilot will happen this December and zombie fans (including myself) could not be more excited. The show is said to feature all new characters, a brand new setting and will be developed by creator Robert Kirkman and will feature Walking Dead producer Gale Anne Hurd as well as showrunner Dave Erickson from Sons Of Anarchy.

It is yet to be determined where the show will be based and considering the zombies have taken out the whole world, the possibilities are endless. It’d be cool to see New York City or Las Vegas or even Toronto (okay I’m dreaming, I know) as the main setting for the new series. Somewhere that isn’t the back roads of America.  Maybe it’ll take place in a military base like in “Day of the Dead”. It has also yet to be announced who the subjects of the show will be. Military? Scientists? Civilians? Who knows. They have literally said nothing about the show, but I can guarantee that fans of the original Walking Dead series will be awaiting this show like a hoard of zombies on people trapped in a basement.

The success of the original series really blew the door open on the zombie genre and I feel really surprised Hollywood as to the financial gains that are associated with them. Since the release of the show dozens of movies have come out, and even a couple of other zombie television shows too so naturally, why wouldn’t AMC create a new show? It’s an ace in the hole and if done right, could be even better than the original series due to the fact that anything goes.  Walking Dead holds the record for the most-watched drama series telecast in basic cable history and I have a feeling that this accompanying series will be up there too.
