Hitting Them Hard – A Promise From Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars: X-Wing

Hit ‘em hard and fast with the Seventh Wave expansion of ships from Fantasy Flight Game’s amazing tactical Starfighter combat game Star Wars: X-Wing!

If you consider yourself a Star Wars fan and love tabletop games, then this is an announcement that you need to pay heed to. FFG’s revolutionary Flight Path movement system has created an intensive, real-time action packed game that truly simulates the white-knuckle sensation of flying an Incom X-Wing Starfighter in the service of the Rebellion!

Of course, if your political loyalties fall in line with those of the Empire, then rest assured, there is still a fighter for you as well.

… Imperial lapdog.

However, to avoid polarization, FFG has also created a line of ships that fall into the category of “Scum and villainy”, appropriately titled “Scum and Villainy”. If you prefer remaining outside the spheres of order or justice, eking out a living as a bounty hunter or a soldier of fortune, then you can try flying Boba Fett’s Slave I in combat.

The Seventh Wave introduces new ships for all these factions, beginning with the Rebellion’s K-Wing Starfighter.

Known for its heavy armour plating and its remarkable acceleration, this is a perfect hit-and-run Starfighter to attack capital ships or stationary targets. Of course, in a dogfight it can absorb a surprising degree of punishment and its variety of weaponry options make it formidable opponent in a dogfight.

The Imperial contingent is represented by the TIE Punisher. This is a beefed-up version of the bomber, with more ordnance and shielding than its lesser counterpart. This is the ship that the Imperials want to use to set cluster bomb traps or simply as a punishment sponge to soak up damage in a mass melee. The added movement capability is a plus in any engagement.

The Khiraxz Assault Fighter is a fighter modelled after the X-Wing with regards to its versatility. Owned by the Black Sun Syndicate, followers of the Star Wars Expanded Universe will recognize this faction and enjoy the opportunity to fly this fighter in service of the criminal element. With an extra degree of hull padding, this ship can absorb a little bit more punishment than its rebellion cousin.

Finally, the coup de grace to this entire expansion set is the Hound’s Tooth – the light freighter piloted than the dreaded Trandoshan bounty hunter – Bossk. With thirteen upgrades and four ship cards, the YV-666 expansion has four variants including Bossk’s own unique version which includes the escape ship: the Nashtah Pup: a unique variant of the Z-95 Headhunter Starfighter which allows Bossk to escape should things go south. The Z-95 ship figure is needed for this expansion (which can be purchased separately) but the tokens and ship card data are included with this set.

A light freighter is a more dangerous ship in this game than players usually realize. With the extra hull and shielding, these ships can absorb punishment but also have a wider variety of weaponry than most Starfighters. In this case, the YV-666 has a 180 degree firing arc and a huge choice of armament. The headhunter is a great addition to this ship that makes it actually two ships in one. This is a dangerous and intimidating addition to the expansion and makes it a worthwhile adversary for either the forces of the Empire or the Rebellion …

… Or whoever can afford to hire them.

In short, this is an amazing expansion. Not only does it support the recent Scum and Villainy series but it also adds to the growing flotillas of both Imperial and Rebel forces. It expands the diversity of forces that provide for amazing tabletop scenarios and battles that this game boasts; storytelling in the form of amazing aerial dogfighting just makes the Star Wars experience even better.

This is an awesome game. The maneuverability of the Flight Path system makes for a true tactical experience where the players must outguess their opponents in flight. The different types of factions simply taps into the wealth of the Star Wars universe and brings it to the tabletop for an unparalleled gaming experience.
