Is Marvel Planning an Inhumans Movie?

Could Marvel be planning to bring the Inhumans to the big screen? Collider is reporting that they are. After Vin Diesel posted a tease his Facebook page this week, the internet started to buzz about the possibilities of a new cosmic team on the big screen, but Collider has taken it one step farther and has confirmed through a source that Marvel is moving ahead with a script. According to the site, Joe Robert Cole comes from Marvel’s writing program and that the studio is happy with the script he submitted. The next steps will be finding a director and cast; which brings us back to Vin Diesel. Is it possible for him to appear as both the Guardians of the Galaxy’s Groot and one of the Inhumans? Absolutely, if he stars as the Inhuman king Black Bolt.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the Inhumans, here’s a quick rundown. The Inhumans were introduced in 1965 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, they are a group of primitive homo-sapiens who were subjected to genetic experimentation by the Kree (yes, the same blue guys we saw in Guardians of the Galaxy and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and developed unique powers and abilities. Black Bolt, for example, is the king and ruler alongside the rest of his family. His power is in his voice and when he speaks he is capable of great devastation. The role would fit Diesel perfectly since he could reserve his distinctive voice for future Guardians sequels.

The big question is whether or not the Inhumans are a logical step for Marvel to take? If they are planning to develop the Inhumans, they will have the ground work for a larger cinematic cosmic universe. They could tie teams together and build to a cosmic event, similar to the developments leading to The Avengers in Phase One. Of course, that would be a huge accomplishment. It is easy to sell a collaborative concept when household names like Iron Man and Captain America are involved. It’s another thing entirely to convince audiences to invest in the idea of Celestials, Inhumans, and a talking raccoon and tree. Marvel has seen such success through Phase One and the beginnings of Phase Two of their cinematic plans, that it is easier for them to gamble on lesser known characters and rely on the strength of their brand and marketing to drive people to theaters. If they continue to make smart creative choices and chose film makers with unique perspectives (like Joss Whedon and James Gunn) they are sure to find themselves with another hit franchise on their hands.
