Holy Hell, Our First Look at Constantine!

For those of us looking for a comic book a little more on the adult side, or even simply just a breath of fresh air from the clash of colourful superhero antics, the escapades of DC/Vertigo’s John Constantine have always been a staple. During the initial heyday of adapting comics into films during the early-to-mid 2000’s, everyone’s favourite golden-haired scuzzy magical Brit got scooped up and put into cinemas in 2005.

Well. Except for the fact that in Hollywoodland, “working class blonde guy from Northern England” somehow got translated as “Keanu Reeves”, and no matter how hilarious the Sad Keanu memes out there are, we’ve never quite forgiven him for his awkward attempts at playing what seemed like John’s long-lost distant cousin Bob Constantine.

Nevertheless, the success of the DC-based television show Arrow, combined with a resurgence in Constantine’s popularity due to his presence in the New 52 now has NBC producing a new, thankfully more loyal adaptation of the Hellblazer comics, with its delightfully morally-dark-gray protagonist being played by Welsh actor Matt Ryan, known for voicing Edward Kenway in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

This production photo from the pilot was posted in support of the Slates for Sarah movement, a charity and memorial for IATSE crew member and camera assistant Sarah Elizabeth Jones, whom recently passed away in a workplace accident while filming a new movie. In response, a large array of film and tv productions from around the world have posted photos of memorial slates on the Facebook group in her honour.

While this first look at the Constantine we know and love looks stellar, we’re still playing the waiting game until the show is ready for the air.
