New Mortal Kombat X DLC is on the way

It’s been a great year for Mortal Kombat fans.

Starting with the release of Mortal Kombat X – 2015’s best-selling game so far – the franchise has expanded into an ongoing comics series, as well as a recent announcement of a new MK movie. And for those fans who, like me, can’t get enough new content for the gruesome saga, Warner Bros. has announced more content on the way.

According to a press release put out today, Mortal Kombat X will be receiving new downloadable content in 2016, which will include four new characters, more skins, and a new fighting environment.

While only a tease of the four new kombatants has been revealed in the form of smokey silhouettes, it’s almost confirmed that the stage we’ll be getting will be a revamped version of the classic Pit stage, as evidenced by some of game creator Ed Boon’s tweets.

As to the identity of the shadowy four, it’s anyone’s guess at this point. Of course the Internet is already rampant with folks trying to discern the identities based on the figures, but Mortal Kombat has always been known for its mysteries – including throwing some curveballs our way (MK1’s Ermac, MK2’s Kano Transformations… really the list goes on). On one hand, if you look at it from the perspective of fan demand, we could be looking at the return of favourites like Noob Saibot, Smoke or Cyrax, or even some of the post-MK4 creations like Havik or Frost (both of which have been featured heavily as ancillary characters in the comics and story mode, respectively). On the other hand, we know for a fact that there are a number of old characters programmed into the game – like Rain, Baraka and Sindel – who weren’t made playable for whatever reason. So what it comes down to really is whether Netherrealm Studios is angling more for a quick fix for more content, or developing something all-new for its voracious fans.

To anyone who’s been paying attention, the announcement of even more DLC shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone. NRS’ previous game, 2013’s Injustice: Gods Among Us, went well beyond its initially announced bonus content by adding Martian Manhunter and Zatanna based entirely on fan demand. With how well Mortal Kombat X has performed, it’s understandable that Warner Bros. and Netherrealm would be interested to keep the support going for as long as possible.

There’s been no indication of when we might be getting more information regarding MKX’s forthcoming content, but if I were a betting man, I’d wager we should expect a slow reveal of the new characters starting in the next couple of months.

Who do you think they’ll reveal?
