Original NES Games meet Punk Rock with PUNKTENDO

I’m a child of the 80’s and as such, the original NES holds a special place in my heart. That thing was awesome – hours upon hours of 8 bit fun. Animator and major punk rock fan Jeff Hong did something really cool this week – he combined classic Nintendo games with punk rock heroes as well as several with important social commentary and the results are hours of awesomeness.

In the punk rock department, Jeff has created 5 games that feature members of famous punk bands combining the with classic games. Play as Glenn Danzig of Danzig/The Misfits in the original Mega Man now entitled Dan Zig, or shoot 18 holes of golf as Fat Mike of NOFX. Super Mario has officially been replaced by Mikey Ergh of the Erghs! in Super Mikey Ergh, and kick some butt with Milo Fu, featuring Milo of the Descendants. The last punk themed game is just another version of Hogans Ally but features the members of  the band Masked Intruder and is called M.I.s Ally. They’re all entertaining, and I love how Jeff mashed up two of my favorite things.

Jeff has also created some socially conscious games, and the messages are clear. Remember Hogans Ally? Well now you can play Racists Ally and the settings for the game are Ferguson, Missouri and Sanford, Florida. Ouch. If that wasn’t enough to piss off white American conservatives, there’s another one called Gay Popeye in which Jeff replaced all the characters with gay stereotypes. Then there’s Duckless Hunt, a take off of the original Duck Hunt, in which there are no ducks. Literally nothing happens, but it is the premise that should make you think.

Jeff is original, and his previous projects such as “Disney Unhappily Ever After” were huge hits. Apparently he’s working on a hockey game based on the Flatliners and Super Mario 2 featuring the members of Chumped. You can play the games online for free at Punktendo.com
