Seth Rogan Chronicles Console Wars

Finally, somebody is making the war movie to end all war movies. Not about the World Wars, the Punic Wars, or the Star Wars. No, they are making a movie version of Console Wars. And not just about video game consol rivalry in general, but about the greatest conflict in gaming history: Nintendo vs. Sega.

Based on the upcoming book of the same name by Blake Harris, the movie will examine the epic battle through a David and Goliath narrative, about how Sega’s Tom Kalinske stood his ground against a corporate juggernaut and… wait, what? Didn’t Nintendo win (after single-handedly rescuing videogames from the crash of ’83)? Then again, I was on Team Mario, so I can hardly be called an unbiased source.

And this was before there was an actual Team Mario at Sochi.

Revisionist history aside, the flick has some serious star power behind it. Seth Rogan (of Knocked Up and Super Bad fame) is signed on to co-write and direct, with Evan Goldburg (who directed last year’s amazing This Is The End) as his partner. They are also writing the forward to the book, so it will be nice to have two interested parties in the directors’ chairs. It’s even being produced by Scott Rubin, who did The Social Network.

I do find it odd that Sony, itself a participant in the current console wars, is financing the film. I joked about historical revisionism earlier, but I hope Sony doesn’t run with the idea. Worst comes to worst, the movie could end with the cancellation of the Sega Dreamcast, while a broken Kalinske seeks solace is a prophetic vision of the PlayStation, the one, true, promised saviour to rid the world of Nintendo’s evil.
