Terminator Genisys Trailer Reboots the Franchise

The new Terminator film: Genisys, when one takes a step back, looks like something out of a satirical depiction of a Hollywood executive meeting. With the way the trailer starts it appears as though fans are finally getting a conclusion to the Terminator storyline, giving us one last film that ties the end of the war to the beginning of the story showing us a lot of the meat and mindset behind John’s sending Kyle Reese back to meet his mother, and possibly showing how he sent other terminators back for the corresponding films.

Then we get the new shift. It turns out that Sarah Conner has already turned into the warrior woman we know her for from Terminator 2 and that an aged T-800 has mentored and protected her for some time, thus rewriting history.

And as a result we clearly have a franchise reboot. So it becomes difficult to judge at this point. A reboot is only as good as it’s execution of concept and while the effect shots cobbled together look quite nice (especially the shot of the young Schwarzenegger) that’s not what will decide the film. It’s an action film set in the 1980s which is a good chance to get some nice visual references in if the crew makes the effort.

If the producers are smart and want their reboot to flourish the best thing would be to let what little they’ve released and sit patiently and not announce any sequels until after the film has come out and reviews end up being positive. Alan Taylor is set to direct the film with his last big work being Thor: the Dark World so not bad pedigree there while David Ellison is set to be executive producer. His pedigree consists of films like World War Z, Jack Reacher and G.I. Joe Retaliation so that’s not as promising.

So between the great love show to the new Star Wars and the great scorn shown to the new Jurassic Park we have a mediocre interest for the new Terminator. 2015 is going to be an interesting year.
