You might have already heard a few things about SyFy’s Defiance. It’s the SyFy network’s first big sci-fi splash since the nerd culture juggernaut that was the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica.
But there’s more.
Defiance is entering new territory as it expands outside the traditional scripted television into a simultaneously launched MMORPG (developed by Trion Worlds). The story-verse is designed to be experienced across both media with the universe and storylines, while not identical, will complement each other and feed into the unified story. Neat, right?
Watch the latest Canadian (TV) trailer:
The SyFy Trailer has a far more pronounced Firefly vibe:
These trailers appear to be very promising if only for the ambition of the project. I’m intrigued by both trailers, (and Julie Benz’s narration!) and look forward to exploring new society that has formed nine-years following a destructive alien invasion.
Defiance appears to be following in the footsteps of Firefly and Battlestar Galactica as it takes on a gritty quality, exploring the decidedly unshiny side of life as society is struggling to survive and rebuild following a major war or disaster. More evident in the SyFy trailer, Defiance seems to have been taking serious cues from fandom’s favourite space-western.
Here’s to hoping this show manages to live up to its predecessors. I’m hopeful knowing Defiance is in the good hands of BSG-verse alumni Kevin Murphy (Caprica) and Michael Taylor (Battlestar Galactica) as executive producers. The show’s stars include;
Darla Julie Benz, Mia Kirshner, Jaime Murray and Grant Bowler. Perhaps most importantly, Bear McCreary (another BSG alum) is on board for the music!
Defiance (the TV show) premieres with a 2-hour episode April 15th on Syfy and Showcase, the game will also launch in April.
