5 Questions with Whiskey Hearts

Toronto’s Whiskey Hearts are proof that punk rockers don’t just get old and get put out to pasture. Instead, they get together with some of their best friends and make music that is every bit as rebellious, without rules but including a few new instruments. Gone are the distorted, electric guitars and heavy drums, replaced with acoustics; stand up bass, banjo, fiddle and whatever else is part of their collective that day.

GEEKPR0N were present for Whiskey Hearts’  NXNE show with Saint Alvia at the Hard Luck Bar last month, and couldn’t leave without wanting to know more so we spoke to one of the band’s founders, Toronto musician Cactus Vella to ask him our famous five questions.

GEEKPR0N: Describe your musical style in 140 characters or less.

Cactus Vella: Some kind of acoustic rebel music. We’re a bunch of punk rockers playing a style similar to folk. I guess it’s folk-punk? Cow-punk? Acoustic Rock? I’m not good at this question….

If your band could have any super power, what would it be and what would you do with it?

The superpower of describing musical styles better so I could answer question number one properly. The power of Grayskull could be pretty cool. It would make for an interesting live show.

Who would be on the bill of your dream tour; dead, alive or fictional?

Johnny Cash, Bruce Springsteen, Husker Du, Steve Earle, and Leatherface

Star Trek or Star Wars?

Star Wars! Totally Star Wars!

What have you been up to lately, and what can we look forward to from Whiskey Hearts?

We recently played a great gig for NXNE. We shot a music video a few months ago. And we have our debut 7″ coming out later this summer on Stereo Dynamite Recordings. We’re all pretty stoked about that!
