If you need to wonder why casual comic book fans have come to treat the entire medium with a sense of skeptical disdain you need look no further then Archie Comic’s latest offering Archie meets Predator.

Yes this is a thing

If you’ve been following the Geek (read viral) media then you’d know that the latest experiment with Archie Comics has the Riverdale teens set against the Predator. Which is exactly as odd as it sounds. Early press has promised that the Predator will systematically go through the group murdering anyone.

It’s a wacky premise; you can’t shake it any other way. It’s quite clear this is someone’s dream lampooning of the Archie story by having the Predator fight…

I’m sorry, having the Predator wholesale murder the lot of them. I mean come on! The only person that even has a chance at surviving is Moose.

Oh come on. He’s lifted cars! Don’t tell me you don’t want to see that.

The only hope is that the story is that it becomes so comically over the top and so in the favor of the Predator that we are left howling at the pages in raw laughter. Even a typical 90s slasher style story wouldn’t cut it for this kind of situation; we need Evil Dead levels of shenanigans on this one.

Writer Alex Di Campi certainly promises that. In an interview with USA Today she was quoted as saying: “Because it’s just completely insane. Let’s take this gentle, beloved, classic teen cast and hunt them down and slaughter them one by one. Seriously, if you wouldn’t jump at the chance to write something like this, you need your head examined.”

Early exclusives are promising. There’s one in particular where Veronica randomly assaults Betty only to turn around and make out with Archie.

I don’t understand what is going on and I’m scared to find out.

Or Betty finding a ritual dagger in the middle of nowhere shortly after and taking it.

Why is there a magical ritual knife? WHO KNOWS!

And the predator stalking everyone the whole time like this is some weird voyeur on Friday night.

Predator watch

Behold, the one Predator who thinks teenagers having a catfight are worthy prey!

So it’s promising and it’s getting four issues, which is puzzling considering it shouldn’t take four issues to kill a motley cast of teenagers.

But there’s a slight chance that this might be a genuinely funny comic series and not a blatant grab for cash that it seems to be. But it doesn’t look promising.
