Like or Dislike: Aubrey Plaza’s WoW Ad


In the latest batch of celebrity World of Warcraft ads, Parks and Recreation star, Aubrey Plaza’s spot seems to have generated the most heat from angry youtube commenters, the heavily mixed reviews have been picked up by AdFreak and EW. The spot has earned nearly 1000 dislikes to it’s almost 3500 likesat the time this article was published and almost double that number of comments, many of them very negative towards this ad.

People seem put off by this sarcastic nerdy girl. The crux of the ad is that her boyfriend gave her the game, then she broke up with him because she liked it better than him. Comments range from annoyance at the portrayal of a nerdy girl as materialistic when she asks for diamonds, sexism in the ad, to disapproval of the message that WoW is a great way to get a girl to break up with you.

The buzz isn’t all bad, there is a lot of love for Plaza out there. Fans of her work in Parks and Rec and Scott Pilgrim are supportive of this ad. Lots of folks out there think she’s hot and hilarious.

    Awesome.  Sometimes a game IS better than a bf/gf.  And lets face it… if WOW gives you more interest than your relationship, maybe it IS time to end it.

Anyone else annoyed by her character on Parks & Rec?  Anyway, I thought the ad was stupid–why didn’t it show her avatar (or whatever WOWers call it) like earlier ads did for Mr. T and Chuck Norris?  And I’m sure she doesn’t play.  This ad struck me like the Robot Insurance SNL spot that was funny because of how bored Sam Waterston was in it–clearly just collecting a paycheck.  Felt the same way here, only this is a real commercial.  Lame.
