5 Geeky Reasons to Start Watching Castle…in case you haven’t already

Rick-Castle-as-Mal-Reynolds-Castle Firefly Serenity Vampire WeekendLooks can be deceiving when it comes to “Castle” especially if you haven’t bothered to look too hard. What at first appears to be a police procedural odd couple filled to the brim with sexual tension and witty banter (which it is); “Castle” has a hell of a lot more to it.

Castle is hilarious, witty, sharp and poignant, and on top of that, really nerdy. It helps that star, Nathan Fillion who is forever a Browncoat, huge comic book geek and all around nerd seems to infect the writing staff and cast (who all seem to share in the geek love) with his nerdy inclinations.

Between comic books, cosplay, browncoating and gadgetry, here are just five of the many geek-related reasons to check out this fantastic, hilarious and really pretty nerdy hour-long ABC hit starring two damn good looking Canadians.

For the Browncoats

Molly Quinn as Captain MalFillion’s undying love of Firefly never subsides and makes appearances both big and small throughout the series. In a second season Halloween episode Fillion’s Castle dons his Captain Mal uniform and tries to convince his daughter that Space Cowboys are really a thing.

There are more subtle references throughout the series throughout the series, so keep your eyes and ears peeled for hands of blue and speaking Chinese in a former job.

Molly Quinn seems to be taking after her onscreen Dad getting into the geekery and paying homage to Fillion’s most beloved role. Awesomely at this year’s Comic Con Castle Panel Quinn surprised Fillion and the audience at the Castle panel when she arrived cosplaying as Captain Mal! How do you think this holds up compared to her Trek get up at last year’s Comic Con?

Steampunk, Gadgets & Tech Galore

In third season “Punked” Castle reveals a penchant for Steampunk design and costuming as he quickly slips into elaborate Steampunk digs appropriate for a case he and Beckett were investigating inside a closed Steampunk society.

Massive style points also go to the set designers and wardrobe for building such a visually rich Steampunk mini-verse.

Take a look inside:

Castle also spends a ton of time fiddling and ogling over every kind of gadget from massive data matrix, to magic shop toys, special effect, bombs (yes) and the newest, coolest iphone apps.

Comic Love

Nathan Fillion is a huge comic book fan, I don’t know whether it’s fair to credit his influence for the various comic book references throughout the series but I’ll just throw that out there.  Among other comic book references (and see my next point for more along these lines), I’m giving this one to Beckett (Stana Katic), a detective that holds her cards close to the chest. She lets her nerd side shine every once in a while, letting her love of Frank Miller slip in the nerd-reference filled second season episode “Vampire Weekend”.

The Upcoming Marvel Tie-In

the-incredible-hulk marvelNow this scoop is hot off the TCA presses from this past weekend. ABC Prez Paul Lee exploded twitter when he announced that the Ghostbusters themed Halloween episode this upcoming season will involve a Marvel Superhero, most likely (but still rumoured) to be The Hulk. This is super cool news probably made possible because Disney owns both Marvel and ABC, and Marvel live action TV series for “Hulk” and “A.K.A. Jessica Jones” are in early stages of development perhaps we’ll see superheroes popping up on other ABC programming… I’ll save my wishlist for another day but feel free to add yours in the comments.

The Twitter Love & Internet Memes

The cast and crew are fantastic on twitter live-tweeting episodes and interacting with fans, Richard Castle even has his own twitter account. Fillion used some kind of persuasion to work a double rainbow mention into “He’s Dead, She’s Dead” and spent many tweets that day letting us fans in on this little joke. The combo of the twitter buildup and the nonchalant way it was worked into the script and the timing with the internet sensation equaled a very satisfying payoff.

If all that isn’t enough. You’ve got this hottie to contend with:

STANA KATIC Kate Beckett Castle

Castle returns on ABC in it’s regular 10pm slot on Monday September 19th, I hope you’ll all be tuning in with me!
