Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso is a long time hip-hop fan so it should come as no surprise that the next big series of Marvel variant covers will be tributes to 50 of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. As Battle World, the continuity shattering summer event comes to a close, Marvel is planning the launch of their newly rebranded titles under the “All-New, All-Different Marvel” banner. Rebranding is a popular trick that has been used on multiple occasions by both Marvel and their major rival DC to recruit new readers or to sway existing comics fans from their competition. A lineup of compelling variant covers can ensure that that ever important new issue stands out from all the other books on the stand. Marvel has a history of venturing into bold new territory, but this time, critics are voicing their concerns about the political correctness of a publisher who is not known for the diversity of its creative teams appropriating hip hop culture.
