MUSIC: G33KPRON’S Top 11 Of 2011 (Part Two)

Here we go again! Continuing on with GEEKPR0N’s top tracks of 2011. If you missed the last post, catch up here. Keep in mind that this list is in no particular order but every song here has a special place in our hearts and on our stereos.

5. The Horrible Crowes – Behold The Hurricane

The Horrible Crowes is the followup side project to Gaslight Anthem’s American Slang featuring singer, Brian Fallon. Behold The Hurricane has very obvious Gaslight Anthem leanings and this single off of their album, ‘Elsie’ has a refreshing yet familiar musical take for both Fallon and Gaslight fans.

4. The Nightmares – Static State

If high energy punk rock n’ roll is your thing, then The Nightmares are your band. Static State is an anthem if I’ve ever heard one and I almost want to make my own post apocalyptic video game just so I can put this song in the soundtrack and kick ass to it.

3. Rihanna – We Found Love

I’m ducking to avoid all the spitballs that will be flying in my direction about now but I am standing by this one. This song kills it. I’m not even sorry here, it just does. I wanted to post it on Facebook a few weeks ago but was scared I’d lose punk points. So my little brother posted it for me. Since then I’ve been seeing it on pages all over FB – on punk rocker’s pages and otherwise – so I can’t be completely out of it. If anyone else was singing I wouldn’t buy it but because Rihanna nails the urgency of the surrender that this song calls for I get goosebumps every time I hear it. And the video? It makes me shake. So good.

2. The Spits – All I Want

Lo-fi garage punk with both the catchiness and short, fast song structure as The Ramones. All I Want is to the point and repetitive yet I’ve had it on my dial on numerous occasions. Punk rock that can be danced to is always smiled upon over here.

1. The Black Keys – Lonely Boy

The Black Keys were a no brainer, weren’t they? After all, I posted their last single the minute it came out right on this very blog. But it was hard to choose what song would end up being the best. The final throw down was between Lonely Boy (above) from the newly released album ‘El Camino,’ or the Brothers’ huge single, Howling For You. The latter was very tempting, I’ve consistently packed dance floors to to its irresistible drumbeat. However, Lonely Boy won out. If only for one reason, let it be because of these folks who actually know the whole damn choreography. Any song that can create a group dance routine will always be number 1. Hands down.
