TEDxWomen: Anita Sarkeesian

Earlier this year we posted a video by Jay Smooth of Ill Doctrine called Sexiest gamer dudes need to get a life. The video was in response to a barrage of cyber hate directed at Anita Sarkeesian of Feminist Frequency for simply starting a Kick Starter campaign.  Anita sought funding for a series of videos she planned to produce titled Tropes vs Women in Videogames. The videos would focus on the way women are portrayed in the gaming industry and offer helpful ways to change it.

After a hellish 6 months of online personal attacks, death and rape threats, Anita has come out swinging with over 6000 backers and 22 times the amount of money she asked for to start the project.

Last week, Anita gave a TEDx talk in Washington DC describing her experience.

To the men who tried tirelessly to tear Anita down, guess that backfired, eh?

Anita is pure awesome, a front line soldier in the good fight. The “little boys club” has a fear that their unrealistic over-sexualized fantasy land is being infiltrated with temperance harpies and pulling out desperate measures to try to stop it. But what Anita represents is the nastier they get and more support she will have from the vast majority of intelligent, civilized and culturally mature gamer folk. This ultimately means the “desperate harpy” tactic the “little boys” try to pull is an illusion in the new gaming reality. It’s an exercise in failure “little boys”, uncivil and unacceptable by modern standards and by modern, I’m talking since the days of Mary Wollenscraft! Keep up the good work Anita and supporters and don’t let small dicks get you down.
