Review: X-MEN: First Class

X-MEN: First Class was phenomenal. If you’re not a fan already, you will be.

In the beginning, it didn’t feel like an X-MEN film. Trying to undo all the previous notions from the last few films in the franchise was a bit tough. Seeing Charles Xavier as a cocky ladies man with a full head of hair threw me off, but that’s probably because Austin Powers has effectively ruined all British people in the 60’s so, I couldn’t help but compare. That’s not to say that James McAvoy didn’t do a remarkable job as Professor X. He nailed it. Sauve and cheeky but, serious and determined. It wasn’t the Professor X I was expecting, but I most definitely was not disappointed.

Micheal Fassbender was perfect as Magneto and exceeded all my expectations. Erik is a revenge-driven, tortured, killing machine with a side of recklessness. Even when he got a little Magn’emo’ with the mom issues, it wasn’t enough to shatter his menacing image entirely. *cough* Anakin*cough*

And, even though his role was small, I quite liked Havok. You can see where Scott Summers inherited his dickish charm.

While X-MEN: First Class is great and I enjoyed it immensely, I did have a few minor complaints.

First off, I’m not even gonna talk about Kevin Bacon because I’ll be biased. I don’t like him. He bugs me.

Emma should have been bitchier and more articulated. While January Jones looked the part, I didn’t really believe her as Emma Frost. She didn’t have enough fire and almost seemed like a Stepford wife.

Mystique & Azazel. Their makeup looked weird and kind of low-rent. It was not believable at all. One thing I’ll give to X2, Nightcralwer looked incredible.

Moira McTaggart and Sean Cassidy. Moira was a Scottish geneticist, not an American CIA agent and Sean Cassidy was Irish. These seemed like unnecessary changes. Why not do it properly?

Technicalities aside, I was blown away. X-MEN:First Class evokes emotion and laughter. You truly feel for the characters and their struggle to make the right decisions.

So, which side will you choose?
