An Obi Wan Kenobi Trilogy? We’d Watch That!

There are rumors swirling around the internet that Lucasfilm is planning to release three films that will not be part of the upcoming sequel trilogy. What is really exciting is that the rumor is that all three films will centre around Obi Wan Kenobi. I don’t know about you guys, but I’d be first in line to see that! Cinelinx.com reported the news directly from their source. According to them, the movies will not be a trilogy but a series of independent adventures that will fill the gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Reportedly, one of the films will take place entirely on Tatooine and feature both Qui-Gon Jinn and Owen Lars while the other two will focus on Obi Wan’s adventures elsewhere in the galaxy. There will also be flashbacks to battles during the Clone Wars. Before we get too excited, it’s important to remember that these are only rumors.

Here is a quick rundown of the facts we do know. First, we know that there will be three movies and the first two already have directors attached. Gareth Edwards, writer and director of 2010’s Monsters and director of the recent Godzilla remake, is attached to the first of the three movies which according to IMDB will release in 2016. The second movie will be directed by Josh Trank who is known for writing and directing 2012’s Chronicle as well as the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. IMDB  also cites a release date, and it seems the second of these movies will release in 2018. Makingstarwars.net has a source that also claims an Obi Wan-centric movie is in the works. This person points out that making a movie about Luke’s mentor would make perfect sense for Lucasfilm considering he just beat out the rest of Star Wars’ all-star characters to win fan-favourite in a poll called “This Is Madness”.  According to their source, Lucasfilm is working to capitalize on Obi Wan’s popularity, which makes sense since he is one of very few characters to transition through the prequel and original trilogies. It’ll take a while before we know for sure whether or not Obi Wan will get his own big screen adventure, but in the meantime, we can keep an eye out for more rumors.
