Are we getting a FF/X-Men crossover film?

A recent Bryan Singer interview has revealed a possible plan by 20th Century Fox to get involved in the crossover-mania that’s sweeping across all upcoming superhero films.

With only two weeks to go before the release of the Fantastic Four reboot, on-again-off-again X-Men director Bryan Singer alluded to his intentions to see a crossover between the two juggernaut franchises happen.

“Those ideas are in play,” Singer said in the interview. “That would be a natural match-up because they’re both ensemble films and there is a natural mechanism by which to do it.” He went on to allude to time travel being a factor, which isn’t too surprising considering Singer’s last effort, X-Men: Days of Future Past, officially introduced a form of time travel into the cinematic universe.

Singer reveals quite a bit with this small tease. Unlike Marvel Studios, Fox has played its cards close to the chest with regards to their future plans. It’s been stated by many that the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse is intended to close out the newest trilogy of films, and given that they’ve acted as a prequel to the original X-Men movies, it’s anyone’s guess where the franchise is headed from here. Bryan Singer has also recently intimated that he would be walking away from the X-Men series after the next release, so his interest in being involved in a potential crossover is a bit out of left field.

Then there’s the performance of Fantastic Four itself. With rumors of major behind-the-scenes issues in its development, centered largely around its untested director Josh Trank, many are predicting a poor release for the film both critically and financially. Given that the film is a reboot of the original 2005 film series, it stands to reason that a poor performance would put the 2017 sequel in jeopardy, let alone any plans to lump them in with one of Fox’s most successful franchises.

Fantastic Four releases on August 7th, 2015. X-Men: Apocalypse will be hitting theatres May 27th, 2016.
