Green Day Announce Trilogy. UH-Mazing.

Holy mother of pearl! My year has reached its pinnacle. Green Day, one of my all time favourite bands, has just announced via Twitter and YouTube (read past the jump to watch) that they will release not one, not two, but THREE new albums titled, ‘¡UNO!’, ‘¡DOS!’ and ‘¡TRE!. First Broadway, now this. Green Day’s trilogy may even be more exciting than Star Wars (ok, maybe not), but if I’m dreaming, I don’t want to wake up.

The band has been releasing teaser videos of themselves in the studio, including this morning’s announcement where they talk about the upcoming trilogy. Up until now little has been known about the direction of the new albums and there are still questions to be answered like, Will the songs reflect the titles and have a Spanish flavour? Will these records send the band further into the “concept album” territory they entered with ‘American Idiot’ and ’21st Century Breakdown’?  A voice that sounds like bassist Mike Dirnt says, “I think it reaches a dynamic, that’s like a whole other dynamic.”  Not much of an answer but in the clip ahead, that is one of the clues we get.

“We are at the most prolific and creative time in our lives. This is the best music we’ve ever written, and the songs just keep coming,” Green Day said in a statement. “Instead of making one album, we are making a three album trilogy. Every song has the power and energy that represents Green Day on all emotional levels. We just can’t help ourselves… We are going epic as fuck!”

The band has weathered criticism from the direction it has taken over the past few years. But I can honestly say as a long time fan that I’ve followed their journey from three chord pop punk to double LP concept records to award-winning conquerors of Broadway and haven’t regretted it. And if the last few years are any indication, these next three records will seal the band’s rep as true innovators. Green Day aren’t the first rock band to put out multiple albums at a time, System Of A Down beat them to it with their ‘Mesmerize’ and ‘Hypnotize’ albums in 2005 but you can be rest assured Green Day are recording something very different.

Needless to say, I’ll be picking up all three records the minute they come out. We can expect to hear ‘¡UNO!’, ‘¡DOS!’ and ‘¡TRE!’ in September, November and January respectively. In the meanwhile, we’ll just have to settle for these cryptic teasers from the band as they take over the studio to come up with something that according to Billie Joe Armstrong is, “a new sound and it’s fucking with my head.” Hmmm. It goes without saying that this should at least be interesting, so tell me: will you be picking up these potential masterpieces when they are released?
