Artists you should listen to: Progressive Metal/Rock/Punk

Turn off the radio. Seriously. In my opinion, traditional radio is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to finding new music.  Anything remotely good becomes grossly played out which can actually be detrimental to a new artist or band.  Personally, I tend to avoid the hype. I’m not trying to be a music snob. I just believe that if something is truly good, you don’t need to beat people over the head with it until they agree with you. I realize “good” is subject to opinion, and that’s fine. I don’t judge you for liking your shitty music and, I’m not gonna pretend that I don’t have my guilty pleasures either. *cough*Asia*cough*

The mainstream media have their heads so far up their own scripted, generic asses, that they repeatedly pass over incredible talent simply because they feel your feeble mind can’t handle the awesome.

Fuck that! Prepare to have your face blown off.

Some of these are new bands and some are not. Some aren’t even together anymore, but that doesn’t mean you should forget about them.

So where DO you find these epic bands? Satellite  radio, podcasts, and myspace  are all great places to find interesting new music.

Not that advanced? College radio stations usually have some cool shit you’ve never heard before.

  1. I don’t disagree with your opinion (in fact, I wholeheartedly agree), but I think some bands are missing (3, Coheed and Cambria, Opeth), while others aren’t that worthwhile (Killswitch Engage).  Then again, that’s one thing about freedom: Not everyone has to agree. 😉

  2. Nice picks!  Deftones put on a fantastic show at the Sound Academy when they were last in town.  I hear Dennis Lyxzén will be performing Refused songs when he tours with Bloody Beetroots this summer as well.  That should be pretty interesting.

  3. Deftones, Killswitch and Dethklok are progressive? While I don’t mind all three, I would Imagine Progressive MEtal to be along the lines of Mastodon and Messugah. Dillinger Escape Plan would be the the most progressive punk i’ve eer heard. I like the list, but not in the category you’ve selected. #musicsnob

P.S Alot of these bands were made famous under the MTV umbrella, its ironic that you give the middle finger to them 🙂
