Neil Gaiman Confirms American Gods Series in Development

Well, many hardcore fans of Neil Gaiman will know that there have been rumours of a miniseries adaptation of the Hugo award winning novel, American Gods. For a time, it was suspected that HBO would head up the miniseries. But now, according to the great Gaiman himself, American Gods will now be handled by Fremantle Media.

Of course, it’s still early days, and knowing how the film industry works it’ll probably be three years before we see the results of these announcements but as one of the hardcore Gaiman fans, I am nonetheless extremely excited to see this project progress. American Gods remains one of my favourite Gaiman novels and, in my opinion, one of the better ones to adapt to a miniseries.

American Gods is the story of Shadow, an ex-con who becomes the bodyguard to the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, a con-man but also a god from the old world. From there, it’s soon discovered that there is a war brewing between the old gods that immigrated with their human worshipers and the new gods that have since been born (I’m almost a little sorry that Gaiman didn’t write this any later. I would have loved to see a Google god).

And as if that wasn’t news enough, it seems that RED has picked up the rights to the sequel, Anansi Boys, for a television series for the BBC. Where American Gods was somewhat dark, Anansi Boys is a far more light-hearted adventure and I really can’t wait to see what they do with it.

Being that it’s the early stages of development, casting still remains a mystery. Like any good Gaiman fan, I shall sit with baited breath fore more news… and secretly hope that somehow I could be cast in the role of Easter… ahem… Dear Mr. Gaiman… I am a blond and slightly chubby actor. Please put in a good word for me for the role of Easter. I will pay you in fan girl squees.

Hey, it’s worth a shot.
